Total Donates a Year’s Supply Of Lubricants to Wensleydale Railway

Total Lubricants has donated a year's worth of lubricants to the Wensleydale Railway, which operates 22 miles of track between Leeming Bar and Redmire in North Yorkshire.

The railway, which is operated and maintained by some 250 volunteers, does not generate enough income, so the donation, worth £5,000, will help towards its running costs.

John Ryder, General Manager at Total Lubricants, said: “We are very pleased to support this important Yorkshire heritage line and to help keep the coaching stock and locomotives running smoothly and efficiently so that visitors can continue to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Wensleydale by rail.”

The Wensleydale Railway is a tourist and heritage line starting at the County town of Northallerton to Redmire on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, passing through the Georgian market town of Bedale and the Dales market town of Leyburn. Rail passengers can enjoy the constantly changing scenery, from the arable lands of the Vale of Mowbray in the east to the hills of the Yorkshire Dales in the west.

Having lost its passenger services in 1954 and almost half its route mileage by the early 1960s, the Wensleydale Railway line survived until 1992 by carrying limestone to the smelters on Teesside. When that traffic finished, the Ministry of Defence decided to use the line for the occasional transport of military vehicles. This traffic kept the line alive long enough for the Wensleydale Railway Association (formed in 1990 and converted to the Wensleydale Railway Association (Trust) in 2015) to build support and eventually form a company to take a 100-year lease on the 22 miles of railway line from Northallerton (Castle Hills) to Redmire.
