What is antifreeze concentrate? 

Antifreeze concentrate is pure antifreeze that must be added to water before being added to an engine’s cooling system. If it is added to the system without being mixed, it can damage the system and requires costly maintenance to be fixed.  

Antifreeze typically features a base of either ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, alongside additives used to improve the capabilities of the concentrate. Due to these ingredients, care must be taken when using antifreeze - propylene glycol and ethylene glycol are both toxic; harmful to humans and animals. 

When mixed, antifreeze concentrate and distilled water combine to create coolant - most premixed coolants feature a 50-50 ratio. This half-and-half mix is well-suited to temperate climates, preventing overheating or engine lock-up in fairly severe summer or winter weather, respectively.  

However, for very cold or very hot locations, a larger amount of antifreeze should be used. In cold weather, more antifreeze (between 60-70%) reduces the coolant’s boiling point, while in hot, more antifreeze (60-80%) increases the boiling point of the fluid. That is why antifreeze concentrate can be useful for fleet managers and technicians that want to optimise their coolant use.
